Behavioural Optometry is a more holistic approach to vision.
Sight is the ability to see. However, vision is the brain's ability to interpret and understand the information seen through the eyes.
A behavioural Optometrist will assess, as well as a general eye examination (refractive error and ocular health):
- Your binocular vision by assessing how well the eyes are working together (eye tracking, convergence, depth perception), important in sustaining near tasks (reading, computer use, sport)
- Focusing abilities, also important for near tasks (reading, computer use)
- Visual perception (or developmental information processing skills), important in children
Then, after the assessment, the Behavioural Optometrist will either prescribe glasses to reduce eyestrain and make both eyes work together more efficiently and/or organise a visual therapy program to improve your visual skills (binocular vision and/or visual perception in children), which are important in our daily activities (reading, computer use, manual work, and sport).
